Song Choice

The song that I will be making a music video to for my coursework is "You Don't Love Me Anymore" by "Weird" Al Yankovic, and was released as a single on June 19th, 1992 from his album "Off the Deep End". The song's lyrics feature darkly humorous lyrics about a relationship between Yankovic and an unnamed woman(assumed to be his girlfriend) that has faltered to the point that she repeatedly attempts to kill him, which he has only just begun to notice.

I decided to choose this song because I think it raises an important issue about power imbalance between couples, which I think is an issue that should be talked about more often. Another reason why I picked this specific song is because I think it mixes dark humour and a serious subject like power imbalance very well, and I also think it is a pretty catchy song.

The song artist, "Weird" Al Yankovic is a famous comedy musician who is best known for creating parody songs that often satirize pop culture by using popular contemporary songs by contemporary musicians. Examples of his well known parodies include

- Amish Paradise (parody of Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio)

- White and Nerdy (parody of Ridin Dirty by Chamillionaire)

- Fat (parody of Bad by Michael Jackson)

- Eat it (parody of Beat It by Michael Jackson)

Besides singing parody songs, he also writes original music, including the song I picked for my music video. His original compositions are often pastiches of the work of other artists; for example, "You Don't Love Me Anymore" is in the style of James Taylor and Nicolette Larson.

The song's genre is a soft acoustic ballad, that features the acoustic guitar. This genre of music is music that solely relies on the use of instruments that produce acoustic means (like the guitar), and not electric or electronic means. An example of an acoustic song is "Redemption Song", sung by Bob Marley, a primarily reggae artist. Pop artists have also produced acoustic songs, like "exile" by Taylor Swift featuring Bon Iver.

For my music video, instead of shooting the traditional form of music video with actual human beings and actual backgrounds, my music video will consist of a narrative that is hand drawn by me (animated). The reason why I chose to do this type of music video is because I think it is a really unique idea, and I think that animated music videos are quite underrated and underappreciated by a more wider and global audience.
