I conducted a questionnaire via Google Forms based on the data that gathered about my target audience's music taste, as well as their interests. Here are the results that I gathered.
1) What genre of music do you most like and listen to?
45% - pop music
20% - acoustic/ballad
18% - Hip-Hip/Rap
17% - indie rock/alternative rock
Most of my audience enjoy Pop music, meanwhile only 20% listen to acoustic songs or ballads. This helps me figure which genre caters to my target audience, and how to appeal to them.
2) What platform do you use in order to listen to music?
80% - Spotify
10% - Apple Music
10% - Youtube
The most common answer as you can see is Spotify with 80% people saying that they use the platform in order to consume music. This fits well with my target audience, as well as my generation (Gen Z).
3) How often do you watch music videos?
49% - most of the time
23% - occasionally
15% - sometimes
13% - very rarely
As you can see from the data above, my audience watches music videos all the time. I am creating a music video that is entirely composed of drawings made by me, and hopefully it will catch people's attention.
4) What are the characteristics that you most enjoy in a music video?
56% - the narrative
15% - lighting
12% - setting
9% - color palette
8% - camera angles/shooting techniques
Most of my audience enjoy the narrative aspect of a music video, if its a narrative based music video. My music video will be catered more towards people who enjoy narrative - based MVs, since my coursework video will feature the narrative of a toxic relationship.
5) Do you listen to any music in a foreign language? if so which language do you listen to the most?
85% of my audience stated that they do listen to music in a foreign language (other than English), meanwhile 15% of my audience do not. Here are the following languages that my audience listen to songs in.
60% - Georgian
17% - Spanish
12% - French
12% - Russian
From the data above, you can see that the language that my audience listens to songs in is Goergian. This is because most of my audience live in Georgia and are Georgian citizens themselves, and do speak Georgian. The purpose of this question was to figure out what language does my audience like, and how I can introduce them to another songs in another language.
6) Do you watch any animated music videos? If so, what are your feelings towards them?
86% of my audience stated that they do not watch animated music videos, so therefore they do not really have opinions on them. However 14% said that they do occasionally watch animated MVs and they think that it encapsulates the emotions and the mood of the songs really well, and it is a very creative way to make a music video. I should create an animated MV that captures the essence of my coursework song, and it should match the lyrics and their meaning.
7) What platform do you use in order to discover new artists and music genres?
70% - Youtube
18% - Spotify
12% - Apple Music
Most of my audience discovers music through Youtube. Youtube is a great way to discover new artists, as well as new music as it is available to a wide global audience (due to globalization). As a result of this globalization of Youtube, people have the ability to explore new genres, musicians and songs from all over the world. Uploading my music video to Youtube would be a good way for a more wider audience to watch my video and comment and like it.
8) Do you know who "Weird" Al Yankovic is? If so, how do you feel about his music?
92% of my audience do not know who "Weird" Al is, nor do they know any of his songs. Meanwhile, only 8% of my audience know who he is, and they think his music is very funny, and his parody songs are quite hilarious and fun to listen to. The reason why I put this specific question in is because I wanted to know if my audience knew who my coursework artist is, and if they knew any of his songs. This also helps me introduce who he is to a newer generation (Gen Z), and to introduce his music to my generation. A lot of generation do not know who he is due to the fact that he is from an older generation (80s - 90s), and that fact that he is a more nicher genre, who primarily targets a niche audience (parody/satirical songs). He also makes songs in other genres, and in my case "You Don't Love Me Anymore" is a soft acoustic ballad. This is beneficial for me as it helps me showcase his musical versatility to my audience.
